Domestic Abuse, it's time to talk

Posted on Thursday, October 27, 2016
"Don't ever let them tell you that you're nothing, That you have nowhere to go," said Carleigh. "Don't let them take your spirits away from you and tell you that you're not pretty, that you can't do anything. Hang out with your friends. Do anything in this world. 'Cause that's not a man. That's not somebody who loves you."

It’s time to talk and be real about domestic abuse.

It happens and it's a big issue. We need to speak up about the issue.
You may think that it will never happen to you, and we hope you are right. If it does happen to you, will you know the signs? What will you do? Will it endanger your children if you don't leave the situation?
If you are scared to tell someone about how you feel in your own household, even if you think it's not bad, it’s time to tell someone and get yourself out of that house.

There is a great website http://www.ncadv.org/learn-more/what-is-domestic-violence that helps partners and children leave domestic violence situations and helps plan for the future.

We all know that men and women in domestic violent situations should leave their partner, and yes, we all know we should help get them out of that situation. But there has to be more to help this huge problem!
What else can society do about this "behind closed doors" issue?
TEACH AND EDUCATE - educate your children and teach them from a young age that domestic abuse IS NOT OK! Teach them with words as well as actions! Educate yourself on the law. Are you afraid of leaving your house because financially you have nothing? Get that plan in motion! http://www.ncadv.org/get-involved/raise-awareness/teach-and-educate
EMPOWERMENT - Are you a doormat or punching bag? NO - so stop acting like it and get out of there! Speak to your friends that you think are going thru a hard time, remind them that it can be ended and they are better than that!
FUNDING - Find and donate to local shelters that house domestic abuse victims. MANY survivors leave there house with just the clothing on their backs. They have to get on their feet somehow and these shelters are a GREAT place to start - but they need help from their communities.
HELP CHANGE THE LAW - http://www.ncadv.org/get-involved/legislation
SUPPORT AND BACKUP PLAN - Do you know someone who is being abused? Help them make a backup plan for when they leave. Be the shoulder they cry on or run to help for. Be there for them. Help them remove items from their home and help them store their belongings. Pet sit, baby sit. Just be there to help any way you can!

What can you do if you are in danger or know someone who needs help?
If you are in immediate danger, call 9-1-1.
For anonymous, confidential help, 24/7, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-787-3224 (TTY).
If you are being abused by your partner, know there is nothing you have done or are doing to cause the abuse. It is solely the choice of the abuser to abuse. It may seem impossible to escape your abuser, change your circumstances, or find the help you need, but it is possible. However, you know your abuser best, so think carefully through your situation and circumstances and do what is the best for you.
